Residence in Srinagar

This house is built in the heart of Srinagar for a leading Industrialist of Kashmir.  The 9,000 square feet house with Basement, Ground Floor and First Floor is built using locally sourced rich and natural materials. Exposed brick and stone masonry with exclusive Deodar wood dictate the palette.

The house was designed to create a feeling of grandeur and hence a horizontal look to the elevation is created by adding two garages at extremes that add to the length of the house. The central living area is connected to outside with multiple openings to allow natural light to flood inside that makes the whole space so well-lit and ventilated.

Due to the massive scale of the house, the whole area was broken into multiple levels to create variety of spaces and pause pockets inside.

The concept revolves around creating a dialogue between the building and the landscape by providing multiple inside-outside connections through large windows, transitional spaces, decks and terraces. Exposed timber trusses and large volumes of double-height family areas add to the grandeur of this house. All throughout this large house, a visual connection is maintained to keep the interaction amongst the users alive. Keeping the harsh cold climate of Kashmir in mind, sustainable strategies to combat cold weather are adopted like insulated cavity walls, floor heating etc. This house has a large double-height living area with exposed timber roof and an overlooking family area on the first floor. The basement is in two levels which houses the gym, home theatre and a large hall used for gatherings and functions. The ground floor has a formal drawing room, a prayer room, kitchen and a dining room that opens to a deck with a place for barbeques.

There is an intermediate level between ground floor and first floor that has a guest bedroom to separate it from main bedrooms on the first floor and has a study/home office. This mid landing space has a wall that contributes as another highlight of the house. The double height wall has a Kashmiri jamawar shawl design on wall cladding with skylight in the roof that accentuates the beauty of this highlighter wall. The idea of having modern house with elements of traditional roots is something that was there since inception of design.

The first floor has 4 bedrooms with walk-in closets and bathrooms and an overlooking family area. The first floor has overlooking spaces and pergolas connecting to windows that create a unique space on the ground floor with landscape. The first floor also leads to a terrace with a green roof through a small series of steps. Multiple levels, overlooking spaces, skylights, natural materials and ample light and ventilation are some key features of this house.

The whole house actually stimulates your senses and has a multisensory experience where we feel the tactility of natural materials like that of wood and stone. The sound of water from the water body in the living area is no less music to one’s ears. The fragrance of plants and indoor landscape is a refreshing feeling. The visual experience through interiors and aesthetics of the house goes as a default.

This house is honest in nature and that comes with the use of natural materials which add the humility to the space despite the grandeur that comes with the scale of the house unlike most huge house which are ostentatious in nature and speak of opulence.
