The Sacred art of Geometry in Islamic Architecture

Abstract

This paper aims to study geometry as a principle in Islamic art and architecture. The paper describes how geometry provides a link between all sacred and traditional arts. This study attempts to draw a relationship between the fundamental aspects of Islamic art which are geometry, Islimi and calligraphy. Geometry is an objective manifestation of the principles and creation and forms the underlying framework for the visual expression of the path that leads from Unity to Multiplicity. Islimi, which symbolizes virgin nature and interlaces with; and balances geometric patterns, would be meaningless without the structure of the underlying geometry. Both these art forms are the setting for the word of God and the calligraphy of Holy Quran which connects to the idea of transmitting God’s word to people. The architect consciously reflects the forms patterns and rhythms around him in nature, thus conforming that his work does not stand separately but as a part of God’s creation on earth. The study explores the relationship between the practices of Islamic art and principles underlying the order of nature. These principles appreciate the existence of a creative centre that links the horizontal aspect of the manifest world with man as a mediator to the vertical relationship between heaven and earth. Overall paper focuses on the evolution of different forms and compositions derived from geometry, origins and developments of Islimi style and the style of the script, calligraphy which requires unusual skill, deep passion &patience.
